Valenstein powers Tigers to BEC rout

KOHLER – Senior second baseman Mason Valenstein had a team-high four hits and five RBIs to ignite the Howards Grove Tigers to a 15-4 thumping of Kohler/Sheboygan Christian in a Big East Conference small school division baseball game here Thursday evening.

The Tigers upped their BEC record to 9-3 (9-3 overall) and ran their winning streak to four. Random Lake leads the small school division with a 10-2 mark, followed by HG.

The Blue Bombers fell to 1-11 in the league (1-11 overall).

Valenstein slammed a three run homer in the bottom of the third inning.

HG busted the game open with a six-run fourth which boosted the visitors’ lead to 15-0. Marshall Albert’s two-run single keyed the outburst.

The Tigers pounded out 16 hits. Nic Koenig, Albert, Jack Lilyquist and Jacob Heim contributed two each. Nine Tigers were in the hit column. Albert, Hayden Smith and Heim had two RBIs each.

Koenig scored a team-high four runs, followed by Valenstein’s three. HG stole seven bases, led by Koenig with three and Valenstein, two.

Isaac Dirker was the Tigers’ starting and winning pitcher. Dirker allowed no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in three innings. The game was called after five due to the 10-run rule.

Hunter Fihn and Colin Fessler paced K/C in hits with two apiece. Fihn led in RBIs with two.

Jackson Edmunds took the loss. Edmunds started and threw 3-2/3 innings – allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on 11 hits with four walks, one hit batter and zero strikeouts.
