Rockets sweep EL-G behind hot bats

Umpire Paul Graumann is set to make the call. – Photo by Mike McGill ELKHART LAKE – The Cedar Grove-Belgium Rockets pounded out 30 hits in the doubleheader as they swept the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters, 22-3 and 17-2, in Big East Conference small-school division baseball play here Wednesday, June 27.

In the opener, the Rockets amassed 20 hits, led by Ben Michaels with four. Michaels slugged a home run. Paul Simmelink, Alex Duquaine, Zach Zimpelman, Cameron Kirst and Chris Mueller collected two each.

Michaels led CG-B in RBIs with six. Bryce Morgan Jason Von Heimburg, Kirst and Matt Poull had two RBIs each. The Rockets drew 10 walks.

Noah Ruh and Connor Wirtz paced the Resorters in hits with two each. Parker Vollbrecht, Zac Bauer and Wirtz had one RBI each.

The winning pitcher in game one was starter Bradley Katte who allowed no runs on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts in four innings.

Ruh was Elkhart’s starting and losing hurler.

Both games ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule. With the sweep, the Rockets upped their BEC record to 13-6 (13-10 overall). The Resorters fell to 1-18 in the league (1-18 overall).

GAME TWO

Von Heimburg and Kirst led the Rockets in RBIs in the nightcap with three each, followed by Poull with two.

CG-B banged out 10 hits, led by Mason Noll, Jacob Bohlmann and Michaels with two apiece. Von Heimburg belted a homer. The Rockets received 13 walks.

Ruh paced Elkhart in hits with two. Bauer had a teamhigh two RBIs.

Von Heimburg started on the mound for the Rockets and earned the win. He surrendered one run (unearned) on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in three frames.

Vollbrecht was the starting pitcher for EL-G and took the loss.
