Flames shut down in Pokel Tourney debut

The Plymouth Flames’ attack continued to sputter as they fell to the St. Peter ACs, 5-1, in the first round of the Jim Pokel Memorial Baseball Tournament Friday night at Loebe Field.

Mitch Beau and Luke Simon combined for a one-hitter with Beau earning the win. Beau, the starting pitcher, went 6-1/3 innings and surrendered one earned run on one hit with six walks, one hit batter and 10 strikeouts. Simon retired the final two batters to end the game.

“I was impressed with them [ACs]. He [Beau] threw very hard and had a nice curve,” said Flame playermanager Rick Meyer whose team has only seven hits combined in its last three games.

The Flames’ only hit was a single by Eric Heidenreiter with one out in the top of the fifth.

“Ryan Wachter threw well,” Meyer said.

Wachter was the starting and losing pitcher. He allowed five runs (four earned] on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings.

The ACs broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 5-1. Tim Simon drilled an RBI triple, followed by Mitch Redig’s run-scoring single and Paul Heinkel’s RBI double.

Plymouth tallied its lone run in the fifth on Justin Gephart’s sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 contest.

Simon and Heinkel had two hits each to lead St. Peter. Heinkel also had a team-high two RBIs.

In other first-round games, Kewaskum shut out Grafton, 2-0, on Friday night; and Mayville routed Cole Oil (Brownsville), 17-5, and Forest topped the Brownsville 49ers, 3-0, Wednesday night.

In semifinal action Wednesday, Mayville will face Forest at 6:30 p.m., followed by Kewaskum and St. Peter at approximately 8:30. The title game is set for Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Kevin Wild of the Sheboygan A’s twirled a three-hitter in blanking the Flames, 3-0, in a nonleague baseball game June 7 at Wildwood Park in Sheboygan.

Wild struck out eight and walked only one. The Flames advanced a runner as far as second base only once.

Plymouth starting hurler Evan Walsh threw six solid innings but took the loss. Walsh allowed two runs (one earned) on only three hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Ryan Wachter, Zack Suchon and Chris Bennin had one hit each for the Flames. Jordan Rennicke’s two hits paced the A’s. Sheboygan scored a run in the bottom of the first on Ryan Schilter’s sacrifice fly and that was all Wild would need.
