Local artist group says thanks by offering free art activities

What could be more fun than sitting on the beach on a sunny Saturday afternoon?

How about having a professional artist at your side, who helps you carve a face in the sand and cast it in plaster, then lets you take it home? For free.

Sandcasting is one of the seven things you can do in the SVA “Art in the Parks” program during July and August. Others include

• Concrete Chalk Drawings • Create your Own Cartoon Character • Smile Awhile Wood Block Painting • Exploring Photograms

• Plastic Bag Balloon Inflatable Sculptures

Is this just for kids? “Yes – kids of all ages” winks Shayna Illingworth, president of Sheboygan Visual Artists. Anyone can just show up and join in. Artists who are members of SVA will supply all the materials and clean up afterward. It’s the easiest way I know to create an original piece of art.”

The 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. sessions will start this week on Saturday, July 10 and will run for two hours each. Then at the same morning and afternoon times on five more Saturdays at six different locations:

July 10 at Cleveland Park July 24 at Veterans Park July 31 at Vollrath Park Aug. 7 at Lakeview Park Aug. 7 at JMKohler Arts Center Aug. 14 at End Park

Aug. 21 at Vollrath Park

Art in the Parks is a gift to the community from the 50 members of Sheboygan Visual Artists, who thank the nearly 200 artists and 300 patrons who made this possible by participating in the recently concluded Small Works Project.
