Semi truck-trailer collides with pickup truck

At 2:43 p.m. July 9, a pickup truck driven by Collin S. Charles, age 19, from Sheboygan, was westbound on County MM in Sheboygan County. A semi tractor-trailer unit, driven by Mark C. Behrendt, age 52, from Manitowoc, was southbound on County M. The pickup truck failed to stop for a stop sign and drove into the intersection and into the path of the semi unit, which had the right of way.

The semi truck then struck the passenger side of the pickup. Both vehicles went into the southwest ditch and overturned. The semi tanker spilled its load of manure fertilizer.

Charles, who was the driver of the pickup, was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the truck and landed in the ditch near his vehicle. The pickup truck’s fuel tank ruptured, spreading gasoline in the ditch, which caught fire around Charles. A Good Samaritan stopped and pulled Charles away from the fire to safety.

Both drivers were transported by Orange Cross Ambulance. Charles was taken to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee by Flight for Life due to serious injuries. Behrendt was taken to Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Assistance at the scene was received from the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department, Howards Grove Fire Department and First Responders, Ada Fire Department and Franklin Fire Department.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol. For more information contact Sgt. John Jones.
