Raeder, Schicker on All-EWC first team

by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff

Junior forward Marisa Raeder and sophomore midfielder Christina Schicker of Plymouth have been named to the All-Eastern Wisconsin Conference girls soccer first team for the 2010 season.

The Panthers have two players who were voted to the second team by the EWC coaches – junior midfielder Lizzie Rooker and junior defender Lauren Schwalenberg. PHS senior goalkeeper Marike Van de Pas is an honorable-mention pick.

“Marisa was our leading scorer this season. She was one of a few returning varsity players and one I thought we would count on to score going into the season,” said PHS head coach Sam Schroeder.

“In our 24 games, she managed 15 goals [for the overall season] and scored in 12 different games. The best among them a goal that lifted us over New Holstein – a win we needed to stay alive in the conference championship race.”

Raeder also had two assists for the season.

“Christina was a creative force for us this season. She played just about every minute,” Schroeder noted.

“Aided by a central midfield pairing with the ever-responsible Lizzie Rooker, Christina gradually realized that she could take some risks and get involved offensively as the year progressed.”

Schicker, who completed her first year on the varsity, contributed six goals and 10 assists this past season.

“Lauren played left back for us this year and is one of the best defenders in the conference,” the coach observed.

“What is most remarkable is that she played JV last year. She came quite a long way in one year.”

“Lizzie played just about every minute for us this season. She is a smart player who works hard and brings a lot of defensive pressure in the center of the field,” Schroeder said.

Rooker had one goal and four assists in 2010.

“Marike was our starting goalkeeper despite considerable competition for that spot. When it mattered most, Marike was up to that challenge – standout performances against New Holstein and Sheboygan Falls come to mind,” Schroeder said.

“But Marike’s biggest contribution, along with our only other senior Nicole Ochalek, was helping our inexperienced team learn to compete everyday in practice.”

Van De Pas, in her first season on the varsity, made 76 saves and gave up only 24 goals.

Junior midfielder Meghan Pasineau of New Holstein and senior forward Ashley Entringer of Falls were named to the first team for the third straight season. Senior midfielder Hannah Meyer of Falls was the other first-team repeater.

Falls, the EWC champion, and New Holstein lead the league in first-team picks with three each.
