The Sheboygan Falls Falcons used solid pitching performances from Devin Christenson and Russell Preder to sweep the Kiel Raiders in Eastern Wisconsin Conference doubleheader baseball action Thursday, July 8.

The Falcons won the first game by a score 5-4, before notching an 8-5 triumph in game two.

The two victories moved Falls back to the .500 mark in the EWC, with an 8-8 record with two games left in the regular season.

Christenson improved to 4-2, scattering eight hits with one walk, one hit batter and two earned runs, while striking out three batters in the first game.

Christenson was aided by Cole Heili, who hit his fifth home run of the season to drive in two runs in the fifth inning and give the Falcons a 5-3 lead.

Bobby Musil led off the inning with a walk and Adam Lorenz singled. Musil scored on a throwing error, before Heili cracked a two-run homer to push the Falcons ahead 5-3.

Heili led Falls at the plate, going 2-for-3, with a home run and three runs batted in. Ryan Halverson added one hit and one run scored for the Falcons.

In the second game, Preder received strong early run support, as the Falcons jumped out to a 6-1 lead by the third inning.

Preder pitched a complete game in picking up his second win of the season. He allowed three earned runs on four hits, walked five batters, hit two batters and racked up five strikeouts.

Musil walked and Zach Van Engen singled in the first inning to give Falls a 2-0 lead. The Falcons made it 4-1 in the second when Christenson and Lewis Halverson walked and scored. Christenson scored on a wild pitch and Van Engen hit into a ground out to drive in Halverson.

Jacob Meyer walked and Andrew Endsley was hit by a pitch to start the third inning. Meyer stole home and Endsley scored on two wild pitches.

Meyer added two insurance runs on a two-run single in the sixth, after Kiel had cut the lead to 6-3. Van Engen led the inning off with a single and Adam Lorenz walked.

Van Engen was thrown out at home, trying to score on a double by Heili. Lorenz and Heili scored on the next at bat by Meyer.

Van Engen and Endsley paced the Falcons with two hits each. Van Engen scored a run and had an RBI. Meyer finished 1-for-3 at the plate, with one run scored and two RBI.

“It was important for us to win both games,” said Falcons coach Todd Struve. “We play Kiel in the playoffs and this is a momentum builder.”

Falls opened the week with a tough 4-2 loss to the Campbellsport Cougars in an EWC contest Tuesday, July 6.

Heili took the loss for the Falcons, giving up two earned runs on nine hits and a walk.

Heili and Meyer hit run-scoring singles in the first inning to give Falls a 2-0 lead. Campbellsport struck back in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead on an RBI double by Nate Baumhardt and a run-scoring error.

Cougars starting pitcher Matt Serwe pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fourth to keep the Falcons scoreless the rest of the game.

Heili went 3-for-3, with one run scored and one RBI to lead Falls in hitting.
