New HGHS auditorium truly a center for learning

WHEN HOWARDS GROVE HIGH SCHOOL students return to school next month, they’ll be returning to a building with a brand-new feature.

It’s something that will not only expand and enhance their high school experience, but will prove a benefit not only to them and the school but to the community as a whole.

The district unveiled the newest addition to the high school, the 17,000-square foot Howards Grove Center for the Arts, at an open house last month.

The new auditorium was approved by voters as part of a $4.7 million school building and improvement package in a November 2016 referendum – approved by nearly a two-to-one margin.

Construction began the following spring and was completed early this summer – in time for the unveiling and use this next school year.

Students in the school district – as well as residents of the district – got an impressive facility for their investment.

Beyond the auditorium, which will prove a stunning venue for plays, concerts, performances and more, the center will spotlight fine as well as performing arts – a vital part of any school curriculum and the community.

Private donations helped fund and enhance the project, including the Prevea Health Art Gallery that will showcase artwork by district students.

Altogether, the new facility ensures that the Howards Grove

School District will continue to offer its students a full and well-rounded educational experience at every level and grade.

In today’s world, public school education must offer a wide variety of resources to meet a wide range of needs on the part of both students and local employers.

Whether it’s learning to program and operate computer-based manufacturing; performing, singing or playing in music or theater; learning to fabricate new products and items in laboratory settings; sharing a vision of the world through various art media; building homes and structures; or more, today’s education has moved far beyond the simple reading, writing and arithmetic of days long ago.

Facilities like the new Howards Grove Center for the Arts show the continuing commitment of local school districts to offering and supporting the wide range of educational opportunities and facilities today’s economy and the modern world demand.

Howards Grove School District voters are to be commended for supporting that vision and mission, while school district officials are to be commended for recognizing and putting forward what is needed to meet that vision and mission.

And everyone, from the youngest students to the oldest residents of the community, can look forward to years of enjoyment of a wide variety of offerings and events in their new Howards Grove Center for the Arts.
