Week 1 football preview

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah at Oakfield
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Lowdown: The Oaks beat the Resorters, 54-12, on Sept. 8,
as Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah got off to a 0-4 start. Oakfield went
10-0 after qualifying for The Jamboree.
Coach’s outlook: “They had a good year and beat us pretty
handily,” ELG coach Josh Bardon said. “They graduated a lot of
kids, so hopefully we have a good chance at going down there
and getting a win.”
Did you know? The Jamboree, the unofficial state tournament
for 8-man football, has been replaced with a WIAA-sponsored
championship this year. Eight teams qualify and the field could
expand to 16 teams as soon as next season. Bardon was unsure
if the championship game will be held in Madison or remain in
Schofield.
Plymouth at New Berlin Eisenhower
When: 7 p.m. Friday.
Lowdown: Plymouth suffered a 28-27 loss to the Lions to
open their season last year, as they gave up the first three touchdowns of the game. Eisenhower also returned the second-half
kickoff for a 90-yard touchdown before the Panthers rallied.
They scored twice in the third quarter and got a touchdown pass
with 3 seconds left but lost when the two-point conversion pass
failed.
Coach’s outlook: “They’re reloading, they’re not rebuilding,”
Plymouth coach Dan Knaus said. “They’re going to be a real
good test for us and we’re excited for the opportunity.”
Did you know? Eisenhower finished 13-1 last year after losing to Rice Lake in the Division 3 state championship game.
Manitowoc Lutheran at Howards Grove
When: 7 p.m. Friday.
Lowdown: The Tigers opened their season with a 22-20 victory over the Lancers last year. Lutheran scored the only touchdown of the final quarter, on a 32-yard hook-and-lateral touchdown pass to get within two, but Howards Grove stopped the
game-tying two-point conversion run. … The Lancers were 8-3
last season and advanced to the second round of the Division 6
playoffs.
Coach’s outlook: “I expect it to be a very similar game,” Tigers’ coach Dave Schmid said. “What they bring back and what
we bring back is going to make for a very nice, competitive football game.”
Did you know? Howards Grove started 4-0 last year after beginning the 2016 season 0-6.
