Howards Grove comes up just short

by Dave Boehler Review Sports Editor

The Howards Grove Riverdogs have nothing to complain about.

They finished as runner-up in the East Shore League Championship Series after winning the title last season in their debut in the ESL.

Johnsburg defeated host Howards Grove, 9-4, on Sunday to win the best-of-three se- ries, two games to none. It was the first time Johnsburg won the championship since joining the league in 1967.

“Any time you get a chance to play in the playoffs or the championship round, you’re doing good things,” Riverdogs’ coach Mark Holzman said. “We had our chances, and ups and downs all year, but we had a great group of guys and it was fun.”

Zach Fritz finished with three hits, including a double, for Howards Grove. Holzman added three hits as well and Cole Reinemann contributed two hits, including a double. Eric Reinemann also had two hits.

But the Riverdogs had the bases loaded on three different occasions, including one with nobody out, and failed to score each time.

“They had the clutch hit, and we didn’t,” Holzman said. “That was really the difference.”
