Local authorities set up traffic control for PGA

Interstate 43 and other major highways in eastern Wisconsin will be even busier this week when golf fans travel to Whistling Straits, near Kohler for the 2010 PGA Championship, from Thursday, Aug. 9 to Sunday, Aug. 15.

Due to the expected increase in traffic during the PGA Championship, the Wisconsin State Patrol is teaming up with the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department to control traffic.

“I-43 commuters and other drivers must be ready for more vehicles on the highway during the PGA Championship,” said Lt. Nick Scorcio of the State Patrol Northeast Region Headquarters in Fond du Lac. “Working with local law enforcement agencies, the highway department, and community leaders, we have developed comprehensive plans to move traffic to and from the golf course safely and efficiently.

“However, drivers on I-43 and other roadways in the area must be exceptionally patient, cautious and alert because traffic conditions may change rapidly during the PGA Championship.”

PGA Championship ticket holders have been instructed to follow one of three routes to Whistling Straits with I-43 designated to handle the bulk of the traffic. The routes are listed on the PGA Championship Web site.

Spectators are also strongly encouraged to carpool to Whistling Straits. Travel information for major highways in the area is available on the WisDOT 511 System by dialing 511 or visiting www.511wi.gov.

“State Patrol troopers and sheriff’s deputies will be out in force for traffic control and direction during the PGA Championship,” Scorcio says. “To help us do our jobs, we ask drivers to follow the directions posted on message signs and those given by law enforcement officers. We also ask drivers to not stop or slow down to talk with officers directing traffic unless it’s an emergency. Stopping or slowing down to talk to our officers could cause traffic to back up, which increases the risks of crashes.”

PGA Championship competition starts on Thursday, Aug. 12. The final round is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 15.
