Tigers second in Falls Invite

SHEBOYGAN FALLS – Howards Grove placed second in Saturday’s Sheboygan Falls Invitational boys soccer tournament with a 2-1 record.

The Tigers rolled over Falls, 5-0 and edged Freedom, 1-0. Howards lost to eventual champion Green Bay East, 2-0. The four-team tourney used a round-robin format in which the place-winners were based on points.

The loss to East snapped the Tigers’ 12-game winning streak.

“Overall, a good tournament. I was most impressed with our hustle, communication and passing,” said Tiger head coach Todd Fischer whose team is 14-2.

Duston Rabe and Nathan Mutsch keyed the Tigers’ offense against Falls with two goals apiece. Paul Elzinga kicked the other goal.

Contributing one assist each were Robert Betke, Chris Niemann, Rabe and Cody Klemme. The assists by Rabe and Klemme were on diving headers.

Tiger goalkeeper Carter Rockhill had five saves. Howards led in shots on goal, 7-5.

Eric Moehring scored the winning goal for the Tigers in the Freedom match 15 minutes into the first half. Howars outshot Freedom 7-6. Rockhill had two saves and teammate Cody Klemme made four.

In the East match, the Tigers had only two shots on goal, compared with the Red Devils’ nine. Klemme made four saves and Rockhill had three.
