Students to participate in OFY ‘Pirates of Penzance’ at EL-G MS Oct. 13

Opera for the Young is coming to Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Elementary-Middle School. The company will present an adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, directed by Diane Garton Edie and Bill Lutes. This performance will be presented at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, in the Middle School Gym.

Sixteen students from the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade classes will appear on stage performing right alongside Opera for the Young’s professional artists, as constables, pirates, and wards. All fourth-, fifthand sixth-grade students will be singing in the chorus pieces.

Opera for the Young brings live, professional opera to elementary school audiences. All productions are fully staged, sung in English and adapted for children. OFY audiences become acquainted with the original scores of master composers, set in contexts relevant to kids’ 21st century lives. Every production features four professional singers and one pianist. Professional cast members are selected in auditions held in Madison and Chicago.

“We are encouraging ELGS students in grades K-8 to come dressed as pirates Oct. 13 to enhance their theatrical experience,” said Barbara Zirwes-Nysse, district vocal music director, grades 4-12. “Suggestions for costume pieces might be: a bandana, mustache, earring, eye patch, but no weapons please.

“Parents and friends are welcome to come to the performance, and are cautioned video recording devices may not be used during the production.”
