Howards Grove girls volleyball 9-0

HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers earned a share of the Central Lakeshore Conference girls volleyball title with a 9-0 record and winning effort in the CLC tournament, held here Thursday and Saturday.

Howards and defending league tourney and overall winner Oostburg are the co-champions with 17-1 dual records. The overall champion is determined by the conference’s dual season and round-robin tourney. Oostburg was 9-0 and Howards, 8-1, heading into the tournament.

The Tigers handed Oostburg its only loss in the tourney, 25-19, 14-25, 15-13. The Lady Dutch were 8-1 in the meet and finished second.

“I’m very proud of the girls. Oostburg is a great team and we were fortunate to come out on top,” said Tiger head coach Brett Damrow.

“We took second in the conference last year, and from day one it was our team’s season goal to make it to the top.

“The emotion on the faces of our team and our fans when we won will last forever. I hope our program has many more days like this. However; this one will always stick out in my mind,” said Damrow who coached his first CLC champion in the five years he has been at Howards.

The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters tied for eighth in the tourney with a 2-7 record and shared eighth overall at 3-15.

Howards’ statistical leaders in the tournament included: assists – Alexis Lindstrom, 135; digs – Lindstrom, 47 and Brooke Schaller, 43; spike kills – Hayley Rickmeier and Steph Bergman, 47 each; blocks – Bergman, 20 and Rickmeier, 18; and ace serves – Rickmeier, nine and Emily Schuh, six.
