PHS teams run to state

MAYVILLE – Plymouth’s cross country program achieved even greater heights in what has already been a memorable season.

The boys squad qualified for state for the first time in school history and the girls team is making an impressive third trip in the last five years.

The Panthers finished second in the boys and girls Division 2 sectional meets here Saturday to earn state berths. PHS just missed winning the boys crown – scoring 83 points to Winnebago Lutheran Academy (Fond du Lac) which totaled 82.

Random Lake won the girls title with 51, followed by the Panthers with 79. The top-two teams in the meets make state.

Junior Haley Johnson led the PHS girls with a first-place effort in 14 minutes, 49 seconds over 2.5 miles. Leading the Panther boys was junior Parker Kastelic who took third in the 3.1-mile race in 16:49.

“We are very proud of our runners. Our goal going into the meet was to get both teams to state, and these kids went after it to accomplish that goal,” said Panther head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“It was fun to watch our kids before the races. Both teams were clearly focused and wanted badly to get to state, and they ran their hearts out to accomplish the goal.”

The state meet will be held Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids.
