SFMS students compete for peace

Seventh-grade students at Sheboygan Falls Middle School recently participated in the Lions Club Peace Poster Contest.

The theme for the posters was “Vision of Peace,” with a total of 114 students taking part in the contest.

Each student came up with their own idea and design based upon the topic. Students used colored pencils, markers, paint or charcoal on the front and wrote a slogan or saying on the back of the poster.

The Sheboygan Falls Middle School staff judged each poster. The judges chose the winners based upon originality, artistic merit and expression of theme.

Mia Bartel won the $50 first-place prize. Beth Schueffner earned $25 for second place and Taylor Tomlinson placed third to pocket $15.

Bartel’s poster included world flags, the earth, children, doves, and holding hands.

“I came up with the idea, by thinking about peace and thinking of symbols that represent peace,” Bartel said. “It took me a pretty long time to eventually come up with the idea.”

Honorable mention honors went to Megan Anderson, Rachel Novicki, Nicholas Burt, Aarika Halle, Ben Le Blanc, Monica Micoliczyk, Brittny Thackray, Rebecca Sohn, Kayla Hemb, Sadie Adamadivich and Madalyn Schmidt.

The seventh-grade students would like to thank Mr. Sloan Allen (seventh and eighth-grade social studies teacher) for encouraging the students to do well and the Sheboygan Falls Middle School staff for taking the time to judge each poster.

Special thanks also go to the Lions Club for sponsoring this contest. Congratulations to all the participants for working hard on their posters.

Written by students in Mrs. Laurie Haag’s third-hour, seventh-grade language arts class and students in Mr. Allen’s seventh-grade social studies classes.
